Orange O Tone 40 Combo and Three Amps from the Baby 100 Series

Even in the era of digitalisation and the associated guitar modelling technologies, Orange decided not to abandon the classic transistor design, as demonstrated by the new O Tone 40 combo and the trio of Baby 100 series amplifiers, consisting of the Gain Baby 100, Tour Baby 100 and Dual Baby 100 models, indirectly following the popular and positively reviewed Pedal Baby 100 power amp introduced six years ago. It is worth mentioning that the British manufacturer has a long experience with transistors, which is reflected in the surprisingly high sound quality with typical analogue characteristics.

Kombo Orange O Tone 40

For guitarists looking for a lightweight, portable amp for home practice, jam sessions or smaller club events, the O Tone 40 is a fairly comprehensive solution, offering a 40W Class A/B power amp connected to a 12-inch Voice of the World speaker and featuring built-in digital reverb with spring hall timbre and a foot-switchable tremolo based on a JFET circuit, providing everything from subtle smooth waves to sharp rhythmic pulses.

The single-channel preamplifier features gain, volume and three-band correction controls and its input circuit is optimised for the use of preamp pedals. Modulation or reverb effects can also be connected to a buffered low-impedance loop, and there's a line output and headphone jack. The Orange O Tone 40 combo, available in typical orange or black tolex, excels with its natural warm tone and costs around 450 euros.

The common features of these amplifiers are an identically designed metal chassis with dimensions 300 x 80 x 195 mm, a friendly weight of about 3.6 kg, a two-channel JFET preamplifier design, a Class A/B power amp with an output of 100 W at 8 ohms impedance (70W/16Ohm), buffered effects loop, a pair of speaker outputs, a balanced XLR DI Out connector, footswitch ports for selecting channels or a second volume (except Dual Baby), and last but not least, the rack mounting option.

Orange Tour Baby 100 – version whose clean channel has, in addition to two-band EQ and volume, a VCA compressor control, while the distorted channel offers four-band EQ, gain, volume and an adjustable and footswitchable second Master (e.g. for solos). The variant features both crystal-clear registers and wide crunch and rich distortion.

Orange Gain Baby 100 – model with identical controls (and compressor) as the Tour Baby adds a Tight toggle switch on the distortion branch to accentuate the upper midrange bands and thus overall tone articulation. The aforementioned four-gain channel is aimed primarily at players who prefer a more massive distortion, but the GB 100 can handle more subtle registers as well.

The Orange Dual Baby 100 – a variant using two A/B channels, each with Gain, Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble, Presence controls, with the A channel inspired by the company's flagship Rockerverb amps – you can set clean sound, crunch and full saturation, and the Tubby switch adds more bass to the input signal circuit, ideal for creating a rounder clean tone or a nice dirty-clean sound.

The B channel with Tight function features four gain stages and allows players to set the desired level of saturation with a tube-like character that the manufacturer claims is "unheard of in any other solid-state units". Thanks to the flexible preamp section concept, where the gain settings can be used in A - Clean / B - Lead or A - Lead 1 / B - Lead 2 style channels, the Dual Baby can cover a superior range of sounds with typical mids that fit perfectly into a band mix. The European price for each model is around 600 euros including the gig bag.
