Puzzle Effects: Pedals That Don't Need Cables

The concept of modular pedalboards, which allow you to combine different effects, save space and eliminate tangled cables, has been around for more than 40 years with occasional breaks and varying degrees of success. The latest design that tries to grasp this idea with some originality is a project by the French company Puzzle Effects. The latter has developed pedals in the shape of puzzle pieces that fit together, with contacts integrated into the adjacent surfaces to conduct the audio signal and power supply. They also have standard jack connectors on the top of the chassis for use with classic effects.

After producing plastic prototypes printed on a 3D printer, the brand announced the first three final products with an aluminium chassis, true bypass switching and a standard 9V power supply. There's a Rocket booster fitted with a J-FET circuit and active dual-band EQ, the overdrive Buggy with a voltage converter (18V), volume, gain and aperture, and a delay Submarine using a PT2399 chip with parameters Time, Repeat and Blend. The price of the analogue, hand-assembled pedals ranges from 159 to 199 euros.
