10 Reasons Why Music Improves Your Health

The next time someone asks you why you're always wearing headphones, instead of the usual: " Why do you care?", try telling them that according to a study by Finnish researchers, listening to two hours of music every day has a dramatic effect on your verbal memory and attention span. Not to mention a much more positive mood compared to people who don't listen to music at all. And then walk away with a smile, so that the person's open mouth doesn't swallow you. But there are more reasons to listen to music.

1. Music relieves pain

The next time you have a headache, play some soothing classical music and keep painkillers in your medicine cabinet.

2. Music enhances athletic performance

When you're listening to your favourite record, you won't even notice that you've run 5km more or lifted 20kg heavier weights.

3. Music accelerates recovery after physical activity

Slow music in particular has a significant effect on muscle relaxation after exercise or exertion, but pretty much any music will get you back on your feet faster.

4. Music improves sleep quality

This is especially true for classical music, which can also treat insomnia (sleep disorders).

5. Music helps to cope better with stressful situations

If you're facing an unpleasant situation that's stressing you out, put on some energetic, upbeat music beforehand and you'll be able to handle everything with ease.

6. Music has the same effect on anxiety as a well-done relaxing massage

To double the effect, take your favourite mp3 collection with you next time you go for a massage and you'll leave feeling like a new person!

7. Music relieves depression

But watch out, the style of music matters here. While classical and meditative music will lift you up from the bottom, metal or techno can make you even more depressed.

8. Music improves blood flow

Scientists have observed that patients who listened to their favourite music not only experienced an improvement in their mood but also an increase in blood flow in their blood vessels.

9. Music helps to eat less

This comes in handy when you want to lose those extra pounds. Put on some relaxing, low-key music for lunch and you'll eat slower and therefore less.

10. Music helps to fight cancer

For cancer patients, music helps reduce their anxiety and fear and also relieves physical pain. As a result, patients can lead a full life and cope better with fighting the disease.

And how has music helped you?
