Jerry Boys in the Czech Republic: Video Interview from Jono Heyes & Beehive Recording Session
The name Jerry Boys may not be familiar to many musicians, but it happens to be very important in the field of music production and sound design. Jerry began his now almost 55-year career at Abbey Road Studios, where he worked his way up from analogue tape archivist through so-called Teaboy to assistant director. In addition to Abbey Road, he has worked at Olympic Studios and Livingston Recording Studios and has received four Grammys. His most notable projects include the Buena Vista Social Club, where he worked as one of the lead sound engineers. We had a chance to interview him during his engagement in the Czech Republic.
Jerry Boyce's portfolio includes many iconic artists such as The Beatles, The Kronos Quartet, John Lee Hooker, R.E.M. and The Rolling Stones. Boys talks about the latter two in an interview recorded in Bohemian Šumava during a week-long recording session for Jono Heyes & Beehive (Asphalt Tango Records, 2023), which he sound-engineered and also produced.
Boys was invited to record in the Czech Republic by Jono Heyes, a New Zealand composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. The album features many influential musicians, including pianist and producer Trevor Coleman and leading Czech double bassist Petr Tichý. Although the recording took place in September 2021, the album Beehive was only released last autumn and soon after received the World Music Charts Europe award (#5 December 2023). The gear used for the recording was mostly provided by studio Aluna. With its owner Kamil Danda, we participated in the album-making as Boys' sound and technical assistants.
In the interview, Jerry Boys talks about recording with Jon, as well as his early days at Abbey Road, the sonic layout of the album Buena Vista Social Club and the differences between analogue and digital recording.
