The Story of the Rare Gibson LP Standard 1959 "Orphanage Burst"
The Gibson TV team has produced a documentary exploring the remarkable history of the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard "Orphanage Burst", purchased in 1969 by Irish guitarist Joe Staunton, a left-handed blues-rock wizard who played in the band Orphanage alongside such icons as Thin Lizzy Phil Lynott and Brian Downey. In this case, it's a rare example of Les Paul from the mythical 1959 Burst series that didn't circulate among collectors and stayed with the same player for most of its life.
As this right-handed model was played by a left-handed player for so many years, its flame maple top has a unique wear pattern, telling its own story about how expressively and passionately Staunton played the guitar and why he was a highly respected figure in the Dublin scene, the hotbed of 1970s rock music. The rare piece was restored some time ago and is now part of the collection at Gibson's Nashville headquarters. Incidentally, Staunton acquired the 1959 Standard LP in the late 1960s for a now-ridiculous 250 pounds.
