Unorthodox Spirit Strat in New Video by Johnny Marr

When Johnny Marr announced his new double album Fever Dreams Pts 1-4, many fans of the British band The Smiths's former frontman were a bit taken aback—the original information only mentioned the EP Fever Dreams Pt 1, which was released on October 15 and is accompanied by the video single "Spirit Power And Soul." But the video also had a surprise in store for guitarists: it features an unusual model of Marr's Stratocaster, fitted with nine pickups.

The seventies Fender Stratocaster with a large headstock and hardtail bridge was given the nickname "Spirit Strat." Thanks to a bizarre modification, it had to be equipped with a new pickguard, because in addition to the pickups, the control system consisting of volume and tone pots underwent a radical rebuild and the classic five-pole switch was replaced by two rows of 18 switches in total.

Due to inquiries about this unique Strat, Marr posted a more detailed photo of the instrument on his Instagram profile, and revealed that the nine pickups can be wired in series to form one giant humbucker. Are we in for one of the wildest Fender signature guitars ever released, or is this just an extravagant custom modification?
