Superstrat Suhr Standard Legacy Ltd: Back to the Roots
Designer John Suhr reminisced about the start of his career, when he and Rudolf Pensa built modern superstrats which are still used today by e.g. Mark Knopfler. The limited edition, which will be part of the brand's catalogue this year and next, consists of two versions of the Suhr Standard Legacy Ltd in a total of five colors. The variants differ mainly in hardware and the sound transmission is provided by active EMG pickups, as in some of the 1980s models.
For the base of the body, with its sharp edges and ergonomics reminiscent of Tom Anderson's boutique instruments, African okoume wood with characteristics close to mahogany was chosen, complemented by a maple top and binding. The maple neck, fitted with a subtle Even C Slim profile (.800" - .880"), carries an Indian rosewood fingerboard with a variable radius of 10 to 14 inches, and features 22 jumbo stainless steel frets.
Models equipped with the classic Gotoh 510 two-way vibrato with stainless steel saddles and sustain block feature a 42mm wide Tusq synthetic nut, and the identical size zero fret locks on the variants equipped with the original Floyd Rose vibrato. Tuning is provided by Suhr locking machines and the hardware has a gold finish.
The trio of EMG pickups housed in black or ivory covers consists of the proven EMG 85 bridge humbucker, followed by the EMG SA single coil middle and neck pickups. The HSS configuration is controlled by a three-position footswitch, volume and tone pot.
The limited series of top-of-the-line Suhr Standard Legacy Ltd superstrats are available in transparent shades of Aged Cherry Burst, Suhr Burst, Trans Caramel, or in Pelham Blue or Black lacquers. The official price has been set around the $3,500 mark.
