Bass Around the World #2: Slap Techno Groove

Playing techno bass lines can be tricky, as this genre of electronic dance music (EDM) is predominantly characterized by a repetitive and hard "four-on-the-floor" beat. Your bass groove should have a steady, simple pulse, as the central rhythm is often in common time (4/4) and the tempo typically varies between 120 and 150 beats per minute (bpm).

Let’s have a closer look at our techno slap bass line. It's lesson time!

First of all, here is our chord progression: G-A-Em-Em

We’re using slap style technique with percussive notes for creating that hypnotic off-beat feel. Make sure you play very consistently, as you want to achieve a computer/synth–like robotic vibe with your bass line.

Keep it simple with few rhythm and pitch variations. For little licks over the Em chord, we’re using notes from the Em minor pentatonic scale (E, G, A, B, D).

The tempo is 130 BPM.

Have fun & dance hard!
