Dunlop Cry Baby MR95LTD: Signature Wah Pedal by Mick Ronson

Following its premiere at NAMM, the Dunlop Mick Ronson Cry Baby MR95LTD wah pedal goes on sale, built on the signature sound of a guitarist who may have passed away more than thirty years ago, but the influence of his playing is so distinctive that Ronson's name still appears in various guitar charts. Few players have been able to combine musical instinct with a deep understanding of how to put a song together like this British musician, composer, singer and producer whose career will forever be associated primarily with the albums of David Bowie.

Ronson often used a wah pedal set in a fixed position to serve as a stable frequency filter for his expressive arrangements, with thoughtfully chosen notes and layered textures creating strong melodies and riffs. An important figure in the development of the new product was legendary producer Bob Rock – a friend and collaborator of Ronson's who lent Dunlop engineers Ronson's original Cry Baby Wah, an early Italian-made model whose vintage components give it a unique sound.

Ronson recorded many songs with this pedal, and Bob Rock went on to use the wah-wah on tracks and albums by many bands. Thanks to the ability to analyse the entire circuit and sound tests of Ronson's wah, subsequent specification matching, tighter tolerances and a proprietary coil, the new version delivers a supportive, musical sound identical to its vintage predecessor, as confirmed by Bob Rock, to whom the company sent prototypes during development.

This special inductor replicates the higher frequency response and softer peaks of the original pedal, providing a well-balanced sound profile with clean, clear treble response that remains pleasantly smooth. The Dunlop team also reproduced the potentiometer's fast initial ramp-up, offering an immediate response that the manufacturer says is unmatched by anything in modern production.

The engineers even included period-accurate, low-distortion transistors and selectable resistors of appropriate value in the circuit design, contributing to a supremely expressive equalisation curve. Following the carefully considered concept, the MR95LTD is a pedal that is tailor-made for Ronson's signature wah-fixed tone.

The Dunlop Mick Ronson Cry Baby MR95LTD, in an unconventional blue-red design, is equipped with a footswitch connected in hardwire bypass mode, the frequency range is given by the 500 Hz – 2.25 kHz boundaries, power is supplied by a 9V battery or adapter, and current draw is just 750 μA. The official price is around 250 dollars.
